This month, NICEC bids a significant farewell to three distinguished Fellows, David Andrews, Jane Artess, and Marian Morris, who have collectively dedicated decades of service to the organisation and the wider field of career education and guidance. All three are stepping back their involvement with the Institute.
David Andrews:
David Andrews's departure marks the end of an era, as he steps into full retirement after an extraordinary 33-year association with NICEC. To recognize his immense contribution to the sector and NICEC as an organization, the NICEC Board have awarded Emeritus Fellowship to him.
His journey from Associate Fellow to becoming the longest-standing Fellow, is a testament to his unwavering dedication. Beyond his vast expertise and leadership on countless policy interventions, his wise counsel has steered NICEC through many complex issues, always focusing on what truly matters to the organisation and the sector.
The field of Careers Education in schools has been made very much richer by his contributions, understanding and diplomacy, and, has anyone was fortunate enough to attend any of David's training courses, conferences or speeches will remember his unwavering common sense approach to making things better for young people.
All at NICEC extend our deepest gratitude for his impact and wish him all the very best for this next chapter, though we suspect his keen eye will remain on the field he so passionately served.
Jane Artess:
Jane Artess, who will also be leaving the fellowship on April 1st, 2025, has made a massive contribution to NICEC as Chair and Treasurer over the years. Jane will also be retaining her connection with NICEC through Emeritus status. In her own words, "Being a Fellow has been a great joy to me and I have made some wonderful friends and colleagues. NICEC is a very special organisation and I have watched it grow from a small group into a thriving community supported by brilliant sessions, conferences, publications, website, and including a more diverse range of practitioners, thinkers and researchers. Long may it continue to thrive and grow!"
During her tenure as Chair from 2015 to 2020, she played a pivotal role in shaping our current infrastructure and online presence. Her dynamic leadership was the driving force behind the highly successful 2019 conference, "Changing Boundaries: Career Identity and Self," held in Manchester. Her willingness to delve into the intricacies of Companies House and VAT returns as Treasurer demonstrates her dedication to the organisation's well-being. We are delighted that she will remain connected as an Emeritus Fellow and contribute her expertise as an editor. We wish her well in her new role as a college governor and look forward to her continued engagement with NICEC.
Marian Morris:
We are also sad to announce Marian Morris's long-standing fellowship is coming to an end as she retires from the role. Marian's extensive career, which has significantly impacted the field of education and evaluation incorporated 30 years of research and consultancy experience at SQW and the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), and prior to that, a career in teaching.
Her work has spanned the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and supported evaluations in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia while also leading large-scale evaluations of national educational and social interventions, conducting in-depth research into area-based programs and community development, and developing a significant portfolio of work in careers education and guidance, widening participation, and environmental education.
We thank her for her service to NICEC and wish her well in all her future endeavours.
